Volvo Trucks Offers Retrofit Solution for California’s In-Use Emissions Regulations

Volvo Trucks North America reports it now offers dealer-installed retrofit diesel particulate filters (DPF) to meet strict new California emissions requirements for in-use vehicles. The DPFs are designed to work with non-EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) engines sold from 1996 to 2002.

According to Volvo, the proposed new requirements from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) are intended to improve air quality by reducing particulate matter (PM) emissions from older vehicles. The requirements apply to all diesel-powered vehicles over 14,000 pounds GVWR; this includes out-of-state vehicles which operate in California, as well as vehicles based in the state.

CARB projects the use of retrofit DPFs will reduce PM emissions by 13 tons a day in 2014. CARB will offer financial assistance and incentives for the purchase and installation of the DPFs (preliminary details regarding the regulations and financial incentives can be found at http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/onrdiesel/documents.htm).

Volvo’s retrofit DPF is integrated into existing exhaust systems and offered in several sizes based upon engine displacement and horsepower. Each retrofit DPF comes with an installation kit, complete with brackets, engineered for the customer’s specific Volvo truck model. Dealer installation is required. The DPFs come with a five year/150,000 mile warranty and can be ordered through any Volvo Trucks dealer in the U.S. and Canada.

Yokohama Tire Corporation's Commercial Truck Tires Receive EPA SmartWay Approval

Yokohama Tire Corporation recently announced that three commercial truck tires produced by Yokohama have been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) SmartWay program, which promotes cleaner, more efficient truck technologies.

According to the EPA, Yokohama's RY617TM steer tire, 703ZLTM drive tire and RY587MC2TM trailer tire met the SmartWay program's criteria regarding low rolling resistance, which makes the tires run cooler. It also helps reduce fuel consumption, which in turn cuts costs and benefits the environment. Because of the EPA's approval, the tires can be used on trucks that are SmartWay-certified.

"Yokohama is honored to be recognized by the EPA for our efforts to produce truck tires that help save fuel and protect the environment," said John Cooney, Yokohama director, commercial sales. "Receiving approval into the SmartWay program reinforces our pledge to our commercial customers to produce the most technologically-advanced tires on the market."

Launched in 2004, EPA's SmartWay program identifies products and services that reduce transportation-related emissions. All of EPA SmartWay transportation programs result in significant, measurable air quality and/or greenhouse gas improvements while maintaining or improving current levels of other emissions and/or pollutants.
