According to a story on logistics news site DC Velocity.com, states could be permitted to raise the gross vehicle weight limit for trucks to 97,000 pounds, but there is a catch: trucks would have to add a sixth axle.
The story reports that bill S. 3705 would require that a sixth axle be added to trucks carrying single-trailer unites to compensate for the extra weight, reduce damage to roads, and increase braking capacity.
Gross vehicle weight is the weight of a rig, a fully loaded trailer, and diesel fuel. 80,000 pounds is the current limit for five-axle trucks using the interstate system.
